Hailing from Boulder Colorado, The Wood Brothers are a three-piece group comprised of Oliver Wood (guitar / vocals), Chris Wood (upright bass guitar / vocals), and Jano Rix (drums / vocals). Their unique sound and stage presence are very reminiscent of other folk / rock groups such as The Avett Brothers, Old Crow Medicine Show and DeVotchKa. The group began playing together and formed their band in 2004 but didn’t release their first single to the world of music until 2006 when they debuted their singles “Atlas” and “Stealin’” late in the year.
The Wood Brothers, while obviously influenced by folk rock groups that came before them, have an incredibly unique sound of their own. With Chris Wood on the upright bass and Jano Rix playing a multitude of percussion instruments for the band, they create a complex and interesting collection of sounds that enthrall fans of the folk-rock genre. In recent years, their sound has evolved to include Rix in their studio sessions as the band’s percussionist, which has led to a more driving, rock influenced sound as opposed to their work before Rix was recruited, which was slower, less busy and influenced directly by the folk genre. Their new album, “Heart is The Hero” is more reminiscent of their older works before Rix joined the group, but still has more of a rock and roll feel when compared to their older studio sessions.
