Doug Rhein, director of the study abroad office at UNCA said students studying abroad face a variety of challenges, including homesickness, cultural adjustment and language barriers. The University of North Carolina at Asheville provides resources to help students address these difficulties.
“UNCA is equipped to provide support and resources to help students navigate these difficulties,” Rhein said.
Students heading to the UK may experience fewer obstacles due to sociocultural and linguistic similarities, those traveling to Asia or Africa face distinct challenges. Rhein emphasized that all students benefit from understanding their host culture.
“The Study Abroad Office at UNCA offers pre-departure orientation sessions and materials to help students navigate these differences,” Rhein said.
These resources cover cultural norms, communication styles, and practical tips for living abroad. According to Rhein, once students arrive at their destinations, they have access to on-site support through local coordinators or advisors.
“Cultural exchange programs and social activities are organized to help students acclimate,” Rhein said.
“I wanted to expand my knowledge about Korean culture and history,” said Lois Cunningham, a student who traveled to South Korea in the study abroad program.
Cunningham said she was drawn to South Korea by her fascination with its popular culture, including K-dramas and music.
“Having a picnic on the Han River is a beloved local tradition, and it was one of the best dinners I had because I was surrounded by friends I made during the trip,” Cunningham said.
The office also provides guidance on adapting to different academic styles and credit transfer processes.
Rhein said financial concerns frequently arise when students consider studying abroad.
“Finances shouldn’t be a barrier if you plan carefully,” Rhein said. UNCA offers various scholarships specifically for study abroad participants, which may be based on merit, need, or other criteria.
Students can also utilize federal financial aid, such as Pell Grants and student loans. The Financial Aid Office assists students in understanding how their existing aid applies to study abroad programs.
“We aim to ensure that students from all financial backgrounds can take advantage of these opportunities,” Rhein noted.
The COVID-19 pandemic caused a significant decline in study abroad numbers nationwide. However, Rhein reported a resurgence in student mobility as global travel resumes.
“We are especially focused on broadening participation among underrepresented students,” he said. “Our mission is to enhance access to study abroad by advising students on a wide range of program options that make it affordable.”
For those considering study abroad, Rhein offered several key pieces of advice.
“Start your research by visiting the UNCA Study Abroad website and clicking on the ‘Steps to Study Abroad’ link,” Rhein said. “Visit our office near the entrance of Ramsey Library for assistance in country and school selection. The study abroad office is here to support you every step of the way.”
“Students discover new interests, form friendships with diverse cultures, and gain life experiences that foster personal growth,”
Having lived and taught abroad for most of his life, Rhein believes in the transformative power of these experiences.
“They offer invaluable skills that contribute significantly to personal development and professional success,” Rhein said.
