Matt Turpin, a junior political science and pre-law student from Sylva, aspires to be an attorney involved in the legal battle for LGBTQ+ equality.
“As president of UNC Asheville Alliance, and the director of the College Democrats of North Carolina LGBT Caucus as well, my No. 1 political issue is full social and legal equality for all LGBTQ+ identified individuals,” Turpin said.
In addition to speaking out against injustice LGBTQ+ individuals face, he works to build community on campus and in North Carolina.
Turpin is also a member of the Order of Pisgah and this year’s executive of External Relations in SGA.
“I assist Leigh and the Senate with any activities or duties SGA does with the larger Asheville community,” Turpin said.
Turpin said he got involved with SGA because of the positive impact it can have on UNCA’s student body.
“I’m inspired and motivated by helping people. I’m a people person and I feel that politics are the best way to create social change,” he said.
Turpin said he likes UNCA’s open-minded atmosphere and eagerness of the students to understand people’s different perspectives on life.
