UNC Asheville is set to launch a summer study abroad program in Greece, offering students a blend of academic enrichment and cultural immersion. Designed to align with the university’s liberal arts mission, the program focuses on interdisciplinary learning while fostering global perspectives. The program will be led by UNCA faculty, Dr. Lyndi Hewitt and Professor Jacob Butera.
“The courses blend history, literature, social science, and philosophy to explore themes like democracy, globalization, and ethical engagement,” Butera said. “We want students to leave with a critical understanding of how complex systems shape society, both in Greece and the world.”
Students participating in the program will earn eight credit hours toward their core curriculum, including four hours of ARTS credit and the fourth course in the humanities sequence (LA 478). These courses delve into themes central to UNCA’s educational philosophy, such as exploring history, literature, and social sciences through interdisciplinary approaches.
“Students will engage with Greek culture and identity while exploring sites, museums, and cities across the country, from Athens to the islands of Paros, Naxos, Santorini, and Crete,” Hewitt said. “It’s a chance to study art, architecture, archaeology, and politics in their original context, bringing academic concepts to life.”
The program, supported by the Greek Ministry of Culture, offers students exclusive access to historical landmarks and museums. The curriculum includes a critical examination of economic globalization, democracy, and ethical engagement, fostering a nuanced understanding of Greek society both past and present.
“Research shows that students benefit most from study abroad programs when they engage in regular dialogue and critical reflection,” Butera said. “We’ve designed the courses to encourage thinking, writing, and cultural humility, helping students challenge assumptions and appreciate diverse perspectives.”
To ensure a safe and enriching experience, the program is backed by UNCA’s Study Abroad Office and local resources in Greece. Travel logistics within the country, from accommodations to transportation, are pre-arranged, allowing students to focus on learning and exploration. Financial support is available for eligible students.
“Study abroad changes lives; the program is a tremendous way to build relationships and bonds that will last a lifetime. It is difficult to put into words the full impact of studying abroad, but it is an unforgettable experience,” Butera said. “It broadens perspectives, deepens relationships, and fosters an understanding of the world that stays with you forever. Whether hiking mountains, swimming in the sea, or exploring ancient ruins.”
