The UNC Asheville track and field team opened its outdoor season at a home meet last week, where junior jumper and sprinter Nkoji Jeju delivered one of the top performances of the day. Competing in both the long jump and 4×100 meter relay, Jeju continues to establish himself as one of the top athletes in the Big South Conference.
Jeju placed second overall in the long jump, narrowly missing the 24 foot mark in an impressive season debut. His mark currently ranks him second in the Big South, adding to an already strong resume that includes holding the school record in the event. His opening performance also places him among the top returning jumpers in the conference early in the outdoor season.
“It felt good to get back out there and compete,” Jeju said. “I’ve been putting in a lot of work especially coming off a strong indoor season, so to open up with a jump like that gives me confidence moving forward.”
The home meet provided an opportunity for Jeju to compete in a familiar environment while setting the tone for the rest of the outdoor season. His performance in the long jump highlighted both his consistency and ability to compete at a high level early in the year, especially against strong regional competition.
“I knew I was close to something big,” he said. “I just focused on my approach and staying controlled on the runway. Once I get everything to click, I know I can hit an even bigger mark.”
In addition to his success in the field, Jeju also played a key role on the 4×100 meter relay team, where he anchored the group to a strong early season performance. The relay squad of Jordan, Foskey, Blue, and Jeju is currently seeded among the top three teams in the conference, positioning themselves as a serious contender heading into championship season. Their early success reflects both team chemistry and depth across the sprint group.
“Running the anchor leg is always exciting,” Jeju said. “It’s all about finishing strong for the team and trusting that everyone did their part before you get the stick.”
Balancing both individual and team events has been a major part of Jeju’s impact, as he continues to contribute in multiple areas for UNC Asheville. His ability to perform under pressure, whether on the runway or on the track, has made a valuable asset to the team and a consistent scorer in meets.
“I take pride in being able to help the team in different ways,” he said. “Whether it’s long jump or the relay, I just want to do my job and put us in the best position to win.”
As a junior and one of the program’s record holders, Jeju has also embraced a leadership role, setting the standard for younger athletes while continuing to elevate his own performance. His experience allowed him to approach each meet with confidence, discipline and a clear sense of purpose.
“I’ve learned a lot over the years,” he said. “Now it’s about using that experience, staying consistent, and helping push the team forward.”
With a strong season opener and a top two conference ranking already secured, Jeju is well positioned for another standout outdoor season. His early mark suggests he could challenge both his personal best and the top spot in the conference as the season progresses.
As UNC Asheville continues to build momentum, Jeju’s performances in both the long jump and relay events will play a key role in the team’s success. With conference championships on the horizon, his early results point toward a season filled with opportunity, growth and the potential for even bigger performances.
