Monday saw the last student government association meeting for this current term. Of the topics discussed, SGA president Obi Osaro proposed banning YikYak due to feelings of disrespect.
“I know some universities across the system that are banning YikYak off their WiFi right now, cause of bullying, cause of harassment. That’s something I’m willing to even suggest to the school,” Osaro said.
Osaro did not provide specific examples of what he considered cyberbullying on the anonymous app.
“If somebody’s got something to say, they can say it,” Osaro said.
After graduating, Osaro intends to join law enforcement. With the completion of his April 14 test, people may see him soon with the Asheville police department.
“I will hopefully be a police cadet by the first week of May. It should be a breeze,” Osaro said.
This was followed by further ideations of grad school for climate science.
“Hopefully I’ll be on TV soon. I’m also thinking about going into politics myself, so maybe you’ll see me if I stay around longer you’ll get to see me run for city council, or maybe mayor,” Osaro said.
April 27 at 6:45 p.m. students can see a meeting between SGA and chancellor Kimberly Van Noort in Highsmith Student Union’s Beaucatcher mountain/ Mount Mitchell room. All students are invited.
SSB026010 was passed by SGA, a bill approving more funding for menstrual products on campus.
April 23 and 24 will see this semester’s final board of trustees meeting, Thursday and Friday respectively.
“Students have become demoralized,” SGA vice president Victor Cabral said in regards to student body communication with SGA and its effectiveness.
They announced the theatre department will be showing Cabaret this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are seven dollars. It will be the theatre department’s last performance due to its closure.
The last announcement on the docket was that graduating students may invite up to 10 guests during this May 9 commencement ceremony, split between natural sciences at 10 a.m. and social sciences at 2 p.m. All students are invited.
