The Women’s soccer team at UNC Asheville has just added five transfers all starting their careers in Asheville this spring!
Spring Transfers are not as common as fall transfers for women’s soccer, since the actual season does not start until the fall. Athletes usually come in the spring to get settled at their new school before the season starts the following semester. The UNC Asheville women’s soccer team had a bit of a tough season last fall and the coaching staff was looking to add some more talent.
“I decided to bring in five transfers to add experience to the really good group of younger players that we already have. As a staff, we felt we needed to blend the team with some older people that have experience of the college game.” Said Coach Andy, Head Coach of the women’s soccer team.
“As far as the five we did bring in, we are very happy with the positions to help with depth and adding quality in those roles. We also believe they are good people and will mesh well with the current squad and the Asheville community,” said Andy.
The five transfers are all coming from diverse backgrounds and experience. Hayden Erck joins the UNCA women’s soccer team as a junior from Katy, Texas and previously spent time at Houston Christian University and UNCG. Kandis Calvin a Charlotte, North Carolina native transfers in from UNC Charlotte for her last year this fall. Alex Gib is from Lilburn, Georgia and after spending two seasons at Loyola Chicago, she decided to transfer to Asheville for her last 2 years. Katie Reyes, a sophomore and another Charlotte native, spending time at USC Lancaster and Illinois state joins the Bulldogs. Lastly, Landyn Wessels from Maple Hill, North Carolina transfers in from Valpo for her final 2 years!
“I decided to transfer to UNCA because I’ve always had enjoyed visiting the mountains and with this school being directly in and next to them I felt like it was a perfect way to mix playing the sport I love in a place I could thrive in and enjoy while attending school and earning a degree at the same time. I’m looking forward to creating lifelong friendships this spring semester,” Said Hayden Erck, speaking on why she transferred to UNC Asheville for her last year of college soccer this fall.
All five transfers are feeling very welcomed and excited for the spring season to get rolling! More importantly they are looking to use the spring season as preparation for the actual season this fall! The Women’s soccer team is looking to win the Big South Conference this year and these older transfers will definitely help with this goal!
