Leadership plays a defining role in collegiate athletics, shaping team culture and performance beyond statistics. This article highlights Patrick Gillen, captain of the baseball team at the University of North Carolina at Asheville, examining his journey, leadership philosophy and impact through perspectives from teammates and coaching staff.
“I’ve been playing baseball since I was in first grade. I started my college career at a small Division III school, Calvin University, and transferred to Asheville my junior year,” Gillen said. “Baseball has been a huge part of my life and has taught me many life lessons I will carry after I am done playing.”
In collegiate baseball, leadership often emerges through consistency, resilience and the ability to elevate teammates. For UNCA baseball, this leadership is embodied by captain Patrick Gillen, whose journey reflects both perseverance and personal growth.
His perspective reflects a broader understanding of baseball as a developmental space where failure becomes a catalyst for growth. This mindset has translated into a leadership style grounded in accountability, humility and emotional investment.
Teammates consistently point to Gillen’s passion and commitment as defining qualities of his captaincy. Nick Bruno, left-hand pitcher for UNCA, emphasized the emotional presence Gillen brings to the team environment.
“Patrick is an amazing leader. He brings a lot of emotion and dedication to the team and is a perfect teammate both on and off the field. I wouldn’t want to have anyone else as my leader on this team,” Bruno said.
Gillen’s influence extends beyond peer relationships and is recognized by coaching leadership as well. Head Coach Alex Raburn highlighted the lasting impact Gillen has made on the program’s culture and identity.
“Pat Gillen has poured his heart into this program. His work ethic, his toughness and his commitment to doing things the right way have had a lasting impact on our team. Leadership is earned, and Pat has earned the respect of everyone on our team. I couldn’t be more appreciative of what he means to our program,” Raburn said.
Together, these perspectives illustrate a captain whose leadership is defined not solely by performance but by character, consistency and relational influence. Gillen’s presence contributes to team cohesion, reinforces program standards and establishes a culture centered on accountability and effort.
As UNCAcontinues its season, Gillen’s legacy is already evident in the program’s collective mindset. Through emotional investment, resilience and a commitment to serving teammates, his leadership demonstrates how captains can shape athletic environments in ways which extend beyond competition.
“It is such a game of failure and it teaches you how to be humble and how to be confident at all times. Being a leader is a tremendous responsibility as it reminds me that my role is bigger than baseball and that my team looks to me to be the example and to always do the right thing,” Gillian said.
