Fellowship of Christian Athletes has already had their third meeting this semester with their fourth meeting on Monday, March 2. Here’s what’s going on in the club.
FCA was started last semester by a few student athletes at UNC Asheville. Their objective is to have sports and fellowship come together, while making a space for athletes to connect and support each other.
Monday February 16, was the last FCA meeting where students gathered in Highsmith Student Union and started the night with a fun icebreaker game that got everyone up and out of their seats.
The night was focused on giving whatever “cross” you are carrying to the Lord. The students watched some clips from the popular TV Show “The Chosen” , a drama about the life of Jesus Christ.
In the episode, it showed Simon the Zealot, one of Jesus’s apostles carrying a sword that was not doing him any good. Jesus immediately throws the sword into the water and tells Simon to follow him even though he might not see why, Jesus has a better plan for him.
The students then broke into small groups and discussed their own “swords” and what they can give to Jesus even though it may be hard. The sword symbolizes something that is weighing on your heart and something that you should throw into the water like Jesus did for Simon.
Since all of the students are athletes some of them had similar swords and could relate to each other in sharing what was weighing on them.
A UNCA Volleyball player, Liv Callipo, shares her thoughts on the meeting;
“Talking with the other athletes showed me that I wasn’t the only one struggling with similar things. Even though we all play different sports, we deal with a lot of the same pressures and emotions. Realizing that made me feel less alone and reminded me that we’re all fighting battles that God never asked us to carry by ourselves.”
The student athletes also enjoyed some pizza when watching the clips from The Chosen provided by FCA!
This club is a great way for student athletes to connect on different levels, not just athletics while socializing and supporting each other! Their next meeting is Monday, March 2 right before school is out for spring break!
