Leadership is a key component of success in collegiate athletics, particularly in individual sports such as golf where mental focus and personal discipline are essential. At the University of North Carolina Asheville, women’s golf team Captain Caroline Patterson has become a central figure in guiding her teammates both on and off the course. Through dedication, consistency and a strong work ethic, Patterson exemplifies leadership by example. This article highlights Patterson’s impact on the Bulldogs’ program through the perspectives of her coach, teammates and her own reflections on the game.
In collegiate athletics, team captains often set the tone for performance, discipline and culture within a program. For the UNCA women’s golf team, Patterson has embraced this responsibility by demonstrating leadership through hard work, consistency and a strong commitment to the sport. Her dedication both on and off the course has made her an influential presence within the Bulldogs program.
According to Head Coach Ross Cash, Patterson’s work ethic and independence set her apart as a student-athlete.
“Caroline is the best type of player for a coach. She takes her game seriously, and is always putting in the work and hence leading by example. She needs no external motivation at all. She is driven for greatness all on her own. She is a blessing to have as a Bulldog,” Cash said.
His praise highlights the qualities coaches often look for in leaders: discipline, self-motivation and the ability to influence teammates through consistent effort.
Patterson’s leadership is also recognized by those who share the course with her every day. Teammate and Co-captain Kate Bennett describes Patterson as a steady presence during practices and competitions.
“Having Caroline as a captain is great. She is an understanding and caring leader who brings a calm, steady presence to the team. On the course she stays relaxed and composed, and she has a way of helping everyone else stay in that same mindset which is something that’s especially important in a sport like golf,” Bennett said.
Bennett also emphasized Patterson’s commitment to the team’s improvement.
“She sets a high standard by always putting in extra hours of work, arriving early to practice, staying late and taking the time to play after we’re done. She always puts the sport first and leads by example, setting the bar high for the rest of us.”
For Patterson, golf has been more than just a competitive sport; it has also been a path toward personal growth and opportunity. Reflecting on her journey, she explains how the game has shaped her goals and values.
“Golf has been my passion because of all the opportunities it has given me through connections, schooling and career possibilities. I also enjoy golf because of the struggle, and I like knowing that if I work hard enough at something, it will pay off,” Patterson said.
Her philosophy on leadership reflects the same mindset which has guided her development as a player. Rather than focusing on titles or authority, Patterson believes leadership is demonstrated through consistent action and accountability.
“I think being a leader is best shown through actions. This builds trust and accountability within the team because they have someone who leads by example,” Patterson said.
Patterson also expressed appreciation for the opportunity to serve as captain this season. “Being captain this year has been a privilege. It gives me the chance to represent my team positively and help lead and support my teammates on and off the course.”
As the Bulldogs continue their season, Patterson’s influence remains evident in the team’s culture of dedication and mutual support. Her example illustrates how leadership in sports is not only about performance but also about commitment, attitude and the ability to inspire others.
