The UNC Asheville track and field team competed at a meet hosted by Liberty University at the beginning of the semester, where freshman hurdler and jumper Morgan Brown continued to establish herself as one of the programs top performers early in her collegiate career. Competing across multiple events, she currently holds the top spot on the women’s team in the long jump, triple jump and 60 meter hurdles.
“It’s honestly been a really good experience so far,”Brown said. “Coming in as a freshman, I didn’t know exactly what to expect, but I’ve just been focused on trusting my training and competing the best I can each time I step on the track.”
The meet featured a competitive field from across the region, providing an opportunity for Brown to test herself against strong conference competition. Her performances have earned her a top 15 ranking in the Big South Conference in the 60 meter hurdles and a top 10 ranking in the triple jump, while also placing her among top five athletes in school history.
Her success has not been limited to just one event. Leading the team in three separate events has highlighted her versatility and consistency throughout the indoor season, something she credits to staying patient and focusing on improvement rather than results.
“I try not to think too much about rankings or leading the team,” Brown said. “For me, it’s more about being consistent and making sure I’m doing the little things right so I can help the team score more points.”
The 60 meter hurdles has been one of her strongest events this season, where she has continued to climb the conference rankings. The technical nature of the race has allowed her to lean on her preparation and rhythm, especially when competing against experienced athletes.
“The hurdles have felt really good lately,” she said. “Once I get into my rhythm, everything starts to flow and I just focus on staying aggressive through the finish.”
In the triple jump, Brown has also made steady progress, earning a top 10 conference ranking and placing herself among the top five performers in program history. She views the event as one that continues to develop meet by meet.
“Triple jump has definitely been a learning process,” she said. “Each meet I feel like I’m understanding it more, and that helps me stay confident instead of trying to force something big.”
Being seeded among top athletes in school history as a freshman has been both motivating and grounding for Brown, as she continues to balance individual success with team goals.
“It’s really cool to be mentioned alongside athletes who have done so much for this program,”she said. “At the same time, it motivates me because I know there’s still a lot more I can improve on.”
As the season progresses, her focus remains on consistency and peaking at the right time. Rather than setting strict program expectations, she is focused on trusting her preparation and continuing to grow.
“My goal is to just keep getting better and staying locked in,” Brown said. “If I keep trusting my training and staying patient, I know the results will come.”
With strong performances across multiple events and a composed approach to competition, the freshman has quickly become a key contributor for the Bulldogs. As conference competition approaches, her early success has positioned her as an important piece of UNC Asheville’s continued progress this season.
As the indoor season continues, the freshman hurdler and jumper remains focused on consistency, development and contributing to the team’s success. With conference rankings, school record marks and leadership across multiple events already established, she has a strong foundation early in her collegiate career. As UNC Asheville moves closer to competition, her continued growth and versatility will play a key role in the team’s performance moving forward.
