Leadership is a defining element of successful collegiate athletic programs, and Beatrice Cocconcelli has embodied this role as captain of the UNC Asheville swim and dive team. Known for her discipline and strong work ethic, Cocconcelli has helped foster a positive and driven team environment during the 2025–26 season.
Cocconcelli views leadership as an opportunity to influence others through action and consistency. She emphasizes the importance of setting an example for younger athletes and maintaining high standards in both performance and attitude.
“I believe that leadership plays an important role in shaping new generations and passing down culture and values,” Cocconcelli said.“To me, being a leader means setting a strong example for younger teammates, showing up consistently, and always giving your best.”
Coconcelli’s approach to leadership has not gone unnoticed by her teammates. Co-captain Haley Fein highlighted the personal growth and responsibility the role brings, as well as Cocconcelli’s influence with the team dynamic.
“Being nominated as captain was a huge honor and has taught me so much,” Fein said. “Being a leader means being responsible, proactive, and empathetic, and I’m lucky to use those qualities every day.”
Together, the captains have worked to build a culture of accountability and mutual support.
Head Coach Elizabeth Lykins also praised Cocconcelli’s leadership and the lasting impact she has had on the program. Lykins noted Cocconcelli’s ability to lead by example and make difficult but principled decisions.
“Having Bea as a captain for the 2025-26 season has been an absolute pleasure. Her hardworking attitude and ‘lead-by-example’ style is greatly appreciated by our staff and her peers,” Lykins said. “Bea always chooses to do the right thing, even when it’s not the most popular choice. She will be missed after graduation but has left a lasting impression on her underclassman teammates.”
Cocconcelli’s leadership reflects the values of dedication, integrity and resilience which define collegiate athletics. Her influence extends beyond competition, shaping the culture and future of the UNCA swim and dive team. As she prepares for graduation, her legacy will continue through the teammates she has mentored and inspired.
