As the spring semester begins, student organizations across campus are working to introduce themselves to both new and returning students. Among them is Gamma Phi Beta, the university’s only sorority, which is preparing for its spring recruitment period.
“Through recruitment, it’s all about you and getting to know you,” said Amber Brooks, the president of the Epsilon Psi chapter. “So coming with who you are will truly help us get to know you better”
The Epsilon Psi chapter has been tabling UNC Asheville’s campus in the Highsmith Student Union and Reed Plaza during the weeks leading up to rush, offering students an opportunity to meet members and learn more about the organization’s values and campus involvement. Tabling allows for casual conversations and helps students who may be unfamiliar with Greek life at UNC Asheville.
“People should go to learn more about the sorority, especially if they are unsure,” said Isabel Weinberg, the financial vice president. “It’s a great opportunity to both learn more about the sorority and get to know the sisters within the sorority.”
Gamma Phi Beta’s mission, “building strong girls,” guides the chapter’s programming and philanthropy. At UNC Asheville, members participate in campus leadership initiatives, academic support efforts and community service throughout the year.
“We hold Moonball every year, which is a great way for people to get out and do something fun while also supporting Girls on the Run of Western North Carolina,” said Adrian Recar, the membership vice president.
Moonball is a big philanthropy event that happens once an academic year. It can be a basketball, volleyball or kickball tournament and it helps raise funds for Gamma Phi’s philanthropic partner Girls on the Run.
The outreach efforts, such as tabling are especially important on a campus where Greek life is limited. Gamma Phi Beta hopes that the visibility will help students better understand what the organization offers and encourage those interested to explore membership opportunities.
“I was looking for clubs to join and see what UNCA had to offer. Since I transferred to UNCA in Fall 2025, and at my previous college, I was on an athletic team when I started there,” said Weinberg. “I was nervous about not already having a community to be a part of, so I decided to rush the sorority.”
Greek life on campus is very small, with two fraternities and one sorority, so the tabling that Gamma Phi Beta is doing in the weeks leading up to recruitment allows people to know that we do have Greek life organizations and that they are here for people to be a part of.
“I think people know we have it, but I don’t think they realize how different it is compared to other campuses,” said Recar.
With rush happening next week, Gamma Phi Beta hopes to see you there. Like Brooks said, be yourself, don’t act different than who you are.
