Track and field is built on more than times, marks, and medals but it’s built on people. This story centers on the lasting impact of our head track and field coach, whose leadership shaped not only the success of the program but the growth of the athletes within it. Following his recent passing, this piece will be told through the voices of assistant coaches and athletes who worked closely with him on a daily basis. Their perspectives help illustrate the culture he built, the standards he set, and the values he consistently emphasized both on and off the track. Rather than focusing solely on competition results, this story aims to highlight the human side of coaching and how one individual’s influence can continue to guide a program long after they are gone.
“Commited and a life long friend. A servant leader. His work ethic was second to none. I never worried about working up here because I knew Joel was downstairs working. He had a real passion for student athletes.”
Athletic Director Janet Cone described Joel as a servant leader who consistently put the needs of others first. His unmatched work ethic set the standard for the program and created trust among staff and athletes alike. His passion for student athletes showed through his daily commitment and the way he led by example.
“Joel really believed that sports can change lives. He felt what was important was time management, teamwork, and attention to detail. Discipline mattered to him and that it wasn’t going to be easy.”
According to Athletic Director Janet Cone, Joel believed track and field was about more than competition. He emphasized discipline, accountability, and attention to detail, using the sport to teach lessons that would help athletes succeed in all aspects of life. His coaching philosophy focused on long term growth, not just short term results.
“There was a former track athlete who had cancer, and Joel spent endless hours with him. He was like a second father. A lot of former athletes are now in coaching because of Joel.”
Cone explained that Joel built a culture rooted in genuine care and mentorship. His willingness to support athletes during difficult moments created strong, lasting relationships. This impact is reflected in how many former athletes were inspired to pursue coaching and continue the values he instilled.
“So many people have reached out with kindness. Joel would want us to keep running and throwing. That’s his lasting legacy.”
Cone highlighted the overwhelming support shown since Joel’s passing as a reflection of his character. His legacy lives through the athletes and coaches who continue to carry the program forward. Honoring him means staying committed to the work and values he believed in.
“Coach Joel is a very reserved individual, but he is a very funny guy. He would crack a couple jokes at practice that were surprisingly funny, and overall he was a very calm soul.”

Murielle described Coach Joel as someone who led with calmness and quiet confidence. While he was reserved, his sense of humor helped create a relaxed and positive environment at practice. His steady presence made athletes feel comfortable and supported.
“In the time of his passing, the team supported each other by doing check ups and making sure people were okay. I reached out to some teammates who were especially close to him as well.”
Murielle explained that the team prioritized checking in on one another during a difficult time. Teammates made an effort to support those who were struggling most. This response reflects the strong sense of unity and care that Coach Joel built within the team.
“Since Joel recruited me, it’s my obligation now to take care of business on the track for him and honor him to make him proud.”
For Murielle, Coach Joel’s legacy is deeply personal and motivating. Being recruited by him created a sense of responsibility to compete with purpose and pride. Honoring Coach Joel means continuing to work hard and represent the program in a way that reflects his standards.
As the program honors Coach Joel’s impact, his legacy is clear. A culture of dedication, care, and life lessons that go beyond track & field. Athletes and coaches are committed to carrying forward his values and competing with the same discipline and passion he instilled. Athletic Director Janet Cone shared that a memorial will be held on March 22nd at 2 o’clock in the Blue Ridge Room, giving the community a chance to celebrate his life. Through the stories of those who knew him best, it’s clear that Coach Joel’s influence will continue to guide the program and be remembered for years to come.
