Celebrating community: Inside the 111th Cherokee Indian Fair

In the heart of the Smoky Mountains, the 111th Cherokee Indian Fair, or ᏣᎳᎩ (Tsalagi) Fair, captivates visitors with its rich cultural heritage. Every October, the fairgrounds in Cherokee, North Carolina, come alive with vibrant festivities, celebrating the traditions of the Anikituwagi or Cherokee people.

The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians proudly hosts this event. The Cherokee Fair is a delightful blend of thrilling rides, a delectable array of frybreads, traditional dress and stickball games. As you witness the breathtaking backdrop of the Smokies, ride the Ferris wheel at night and savor the delectable fare passed down through generations, you’ll experience a portion of what makes this an exceptional occasion.

Throughout the week, many events occur at the fair, including the opening parade and the Miss Cherokee pageant, portraying the enduring spirit of the Anikituwagi. This historic event is not just a fair; it’s a cultural celebration that brings people together in a vibrant tapestry of tradition and community.
